According to the World Health Organization, our country is still hyperendemic for Hepatitis B infection with an estimated prevalence rate of 16%. This translated to 16 million Filipinos who are currently chronic carriers of Hepatitis B and a great majority of these patients belong to the marginalized groups of the community.
To address this alarming concern, NKTI Liver Center intensified its advocacy to increase the public awareness on the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and prevention of various liver diseases through lay fora, lobby exhibits and hepatitis screening. In line with the celebration of the World Hepatitis Day, the Center held its celebration last July 27, 2015. Fifteen participants joined in the on-the-spot drawing contest as one of the highlights of the celebration.
This lay forum followed the celebration served about 100 patients who availed of free screening for hepatitis B.
The advocacy on preventing hepatitis became not only informative but also hopeful as World Hepatitis Day was celebrated that day.
